Language Requirements
Intensive English programs are available that will enable students to begin their diploma or certificate program as quickly as possible. The Academy of Learning's ESL (English as a Second Language) program is designed for our students who require a smooth transition to the program of their choice.
We offer six levels of ESL instruction. Each level takes five weeks to complete.
Basic Level One
For students with a limited understanding of the English language, the focus will be on rudimentary English both written and conversational with emphasis on grammar and vocabulary.
Basic Level Two
Builds on the Basic Level One. Focus on sentence construction and phrase development, as well as developing verbal skills needed in the business world. This course builds grammar and vocabulary skills further.
Intermediate Level One
Emphasis on English for business purposes. Students will learn how to describe personal experiences and situations both written and orally.
Intermediate Level Two
Builds on grammar and vocabulary skills. Listening, viewing, reading and comprehension is emphasized in this level. Students will develop skills including interpreting viewed events and analyzing statements, words and paragraphs in both written and oral formats.
Advanced Level One
Students will enhance their ability to write a report or an essay and present different arguments from different viewpoints; Major components of study include researching and how to organize information. Emphasis on vocabulary building.
Advanced Level Two
Students engage in preparing for their TOEFL, CAEL or IECTS examination. This is an intensive program. Students must have mastered all previous levels prior to taking this course.
International students with an English as a Second Language background will be tested for placement. Students with a high proficiency in English may challenge the TOEFL or any other English proficiency test.
